What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a way of removing hair permanently by treating each hair follicle on its own. It has been used for well over a century and works on every hair colour and skin tone.

How it works, step by step

Every hair grows from a follicle under the skin. In electrolysis a very fine probe, about the width of the hair itself, slides into the natural opening of the follicle. Nothing pierces the skin's surface. A tiny, controlled current then treats the part of the follicle that grows the hair, and the hair is lifted out gently with tweezers, without pulling.

Because the growth cells are treated, that follicle stops producing hair. This is why electrolysis is described as permanent, while laser and IPL are described as long-term reduction.

Why it takes several sessions

Hair grows in cycles. At any time some hairs are growing, some are resting and some are not visible at all. Each session treats the hairs that are growing then, so an area becomes clear over a series of visits, usually spaced a week or a few weeks apart. Thick, long-threaded or hormonal hair takes longer than a few fine hairs.

Ramya's clients give a feel for it: one client's thinned eyebrows were restored and permanently shaped over four months; another reached control of upper lip and eyebrow growth after about two years of regular treatment. Your plan depends on your hair, and Ramya explains it at the consultation.

Does it hurt?

You feel a brief warm or stinging sensation at each hair, lasting a moment. Most people find it very manageable, and many of Ramya's clients describe it as gentler than threading. Ramya works at your pace and you can pause at any time.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone tired of threading, waxing or shaving the same area again and again.
  • People with white, grey, blonde or fine hair, which laser cannot treat.
  • Every skin tone, including darker and tanned skin.
  • Facial hair linked to hormones or PCOS, ideally alongside your doctor's care.
  • Eyebrow shaping, where every hair needs to be chosen by hand.

Before and after a session

  • Let the hair grow so it can be seen and treated. Do not pluck, thread or wax between sessions; trimming is fine.
  • Come with clean skin and no makeup on the area.
  • Some redness or small raised dots are normal afterwards and usually settle within hours.
  • Keep the area clean, avoid makeup, steam and strong sun for a day, and follow the aftercare Ramya gives you.

Is electrolysis safe?

Performed by a trained, experienced electrologist with clean technique, electrolysis is a well established and safe method. In the United States it is the only method the FDA allows to be marketed as permanent hair removal. If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or have a skin condition in the area, mention it at your consultation.
